A twin pregnancy refers to a pregnancy in which a woman is carrying two fetuses instead of the usual one. Twin pregnancies can occur either as a result of two eggs being fertilized by two different sperm (fraternal twins) or a single fertilized egg splitting into two embryos (identical twins). Twin pregnancies are considered high-risk due to the increased likelihood of complications compared to singleton pregnancies.
The approach to childbirth can vary. Vaginal delivery is possible for many twin pregnancies, especially if the first twin is in a head-down position. However, due to the increased risk of complications, some twin pregnancies might necessitate a cesarean section.
